Corfu Island is situated in the group of Ionian Islands just off the west coast of mainland Greece. The name Corfu is said to come from the mythical creature Corcyra [Kerkyra] who the sea god Poseidon bought here.
Corfu has suffered many invasions over the years, roman, French and British being the main ones. This has created an amazing and unique collection of architecture in the main town, with its “café-society” and an eclectic mix of architecture [Venetian], monuments [mainly British] and the famous Liston and Esplanade [French]. The Liston is so called after the Venetian practise of having a “list” of noble family's and only they were allowed to walk along this promenade!!The town has now been awarded the honour of being declared a UNESCO world heritage site and when you wander around you will understand why. The shaded alleyways and cobbled streets with washing hanging across, the silversmiths and olive wood shops at every turn, and coffee shops everywhere.
The imposing Palace of St Michael and St George built by the British between 1819-24 was once the residence of the Greek royal family and now houses the magnificent museum of Asiatic art with over 10,000 pieces!
During the Venetian period, the locals were financially rewarded to plant olive trees, to produce oil. This is why the island is so richly covered with these trees, some of which have the most unusually gnarled and twisted trunks! The other thing that the island is famous for is the Kumquat. This is a small orange oval fruit, which is a member of the citrus family. The kumquat is unique though in the fact that it may be eaten whole – pith and skin included. It is used to make preserves and liqueur and there are various factories around the island that you may visit for a taste.
Corfu is a diverse mixture of shingle beaches and coves, glorious sandy beaches, hills and valleys covered with the silver green of the olive trees, small inland villages, coastal tourist resorts and the cosmopolitan Corfu town.
Corfu has so much to offer, whether you want to just relax on a beach and occasionally try one of the water sports or venture under the water and try scuba diving.
Or perhaps you would prefer to immerse yourself in culture rather than water? Then there is a treasure trove of museums, churches, fortresses, and the famous Achilleion palace, to name some.
Perhaps you would like to see the inland scenery from horseback? Or hire a car or bicycle or just go walking and discover your own Corfu? …..The choice is up to you!
